ODE TO JOI
The diva is back with "Star Kitty's Revenge"
EW Grade: B+
Eight years after her debut, "Pendulum Vibe," snagged her the title of R&B's most twisted diva, Joi returns to take on Macy Gray with Star Kitty's Revenge. She's still an oddball, singing about lust and pimps and sticking unnecessary ruminations between tracks. But the music is dark, minimalist funk -- sexy, drowsy, electro-soul with producers like Dallas Austin dipping her in chop-chop beats. The standout "17 Inches of Snow" is Alicia Keys after a few more years and a few disappointments.
